FINAL!

For my final I chose to take portrait shots of my friend Salena Garcia. I really enjoy taking pictures of people and capturing their moments. I feel that the natural smiles and poses call for the best pictures because it truly describes the person and who they are. We took pictures around my neighborhood and in my front/back yard where I thought the scenery and nature flourished the most.

Critique!

Tommy- (Emphasis)

When I look at this photo I feel emotion. I feel a mood and a set tone. The picture is dark with a light and the lights reflection leading up to it which is where I start to see the emphasis. Obviously the bright light is emphasized in the dark background as well. I think this photo is about a deeper meaning than actually portrayed. When I look at it I feel a calm, serene place with heat. It is about finding your inner self and relaxing while searching deep within.

This photo uses good exposure and lighting. You can see a lighting blur above the candles flame which adds an element to it. The blue and orange spots in the background also seem to add character. You can find other emotions in this picture just by looking at the candle and then back at the background. I see dots of happiness, maybe as if someone is sitting by the candle and meditating, feeling their happiness come to life. The focus is well done on this picture as well. The edge of the candle is nice and crisp leading up to the candle which gives off a blur. The background is black and mysterious to the point where you can’t really see what’s going on. This adds to the emphasis and mood.

I think maybe cropping the picture farther up so you can’t see too much of the bottom would have been a little more beneficial considering the rule of thirds.
This picture would definitely not give off the same effects as it does now if you were to use black and white. The tint of the candle, flame, and spots in the background make your picture work and represent moods and emotion so that worked well!

I really like the symbolism that you get when looking at the picture. The darkness and mystery of this photo keeps you thinking. You could probably base a story off of this one simple picture.

One thing that I would have changed about this photo was a tiny bit of cropping. Shifting the photo up a little so you can’t see as much of the black bottom would have worked well. Just because it is all black and all of that black is unnecessary. This would help you achieve the rule of thirds.
